Streaming F-Zero (Our Twitch Team-Page is found here)
Reply to this Post

Hey. So streaming is pretty big these days, sites like http://en.twitch.tv/ exist and you can find alot of different games being streamed there. This past week, http://speeddemosarchive.com/ was holding their yearly charity marathon where they basically just speedrun a bunch of games for charity. And what I noticed was that for each game they also linked to the runner's own personal twitch.tv stream. So apperantly most of the speedrunners at SDA are streaming their speedrunning sessions, which made me think why there are no F-Zero streams... I think it would be freakin' awesome to watch F-Zero players stream their TA sessions and perhaps even with live commentary.

And what's good is that streaming is really easier than ever to pull out: all you need is a streaming program, I recommend http://www.xsplit.com/ and http://www.obsproject.com/, and you will also need some sort of capture card. A Pinnacle Dazzle is an example of a card that will do the job if you play on older systems. They are also very cheap.

So would anyone be up to start the very first F-Zero Time Attack stream? some are already recording their runs live since there are no replay function in most of the f-zero games, so the step to stream is not that far away already. And what's neat with a site such as twitch.tv is that it auto records everything you're streaming. So the advantages for it are many but mainly i think it's just a great way to show off the F-Zero games to the public since streaming is becoming huge these days.

Update: Check out http://www.twitch.tv/team/fzc for a bunch of people that stream F-Zero. If you want to be added too, send me a msg.

It seems like a good idea. www.twitch.tv has become a very popular platform among speedrunners. It could be a new way of presenting our community. Personally I'm disappointed that I haven't acquired the necessary equipment before I got more deeply into MV again. I could imagine Legend, Taro and Edward streaming their sessions. I'd love for BPA to record his stuff... would contribute some cash right there to make it happen Wink

This is something I've wanted to do for a while, but because of how weak and old my computer is (0.9GHz processor) I can't stream at the moment. If I try to stream with xsplits, the computer will just crash, and without it I just had constant lag when trying to stream directly from my capture card. I did a live world record right here http://j-tv.me/odc2Fh to those interested.

When I get a new computer I can hopefully start to stream. Not sure if anyone will watch, because GX was almost dead last year. But... Perhaps it can bring some activity to the site again if I start to stream more often? :-)

Anyways, here's my channel: http://no.twitch.tv/cgn0

I would like to see other good F-Zero players around here to play live, too, so please tell me if some of you are going live. ;-)

What kind of upload speeds do you need for streaming your gameplay?

What upload speed you need depends on the settings you are going to use and that the computer isn't completely crap like mine. By using xsplits I think most people should be able to stream with upload speed of maybe 3mb/s? This is at least enough to what I've read in a forum. You can adjust the framerate and resolution in xsplits which is the reason to why the upload speed can vary.

You can check the upload speed here if you haven't already: http://speedtest.net/

I would say good enough quality for F-Zero streaming would be something between 360p-480p and constant framerate between 20-30fps. Audio is whatever to me.

I'm up for this. My upload speeds are 4.8mbps so all I need to get is a webcam.

0.3mb/s sounds too low, but who knows?

BPA, shouldn't you use a Gameboy Player on a Gamecube (w/GBA cable) and a capture card? Or maybe that would be too expensive? With a webcam you would need to hold the GBA at the same spot all the time, which I had problems with when recording the 3DS. I just find it more convenient to play without worrying about that, but you're probably different than me?

I traveled to Germany in 2010 to play with the setup you described (swapping out the capture card with a VCR). I dislike using a GC controller, and I dislike the appendage that slots over the GBA if you were to use that as a controller. Having a webcam that can show my hands and free me of any annoyances like the above seems a far more ideal solution to me. I think if I can fix a webcam into a particular spot I can remain fairly still.

Do graphics cards matter much for this sort of thing, or is the quality of a stream mostly dependent on the webcam model?

i've been streaming X and GX a few times last year and this year.

for some reason, the only game that lags for me is GX. i guess the game moves too fast for the programs. i'll try lowering the framerate in xsplit next time i play it.

my channel, just in case someone wants to see what i've played: http://es.twitch.tv/uchihasda

for BPA: the stream quality depends mostly on your webcam model, capture card quality and internet speed. the graphics card wouldn't do much for this kind of thing.

Figured it would be appropriate to put a quick reply here. Just signed up for twitch.tv and got the FMLE all set up. Here is a link to my account.

Watching a bit of Edward406's stream atm, he's playing Fire Field fast laps. I hear a lot of chinking in the background, I can only assume the man drinks fine tea from a china cup.

Something to try for the next stream when we're using Skype:

@BPA: Haha, I wish I had more sophistication like that. I drink tea on occasion, but that clinking was likely my spoon and bowl of chili, either that or oatmeal (slop food lol).

@tbk: lol thanks, it's a good way to pass the time and keep the mood cheery on those long stretches to GP 5 tracks Very Happy

@BenB17: I am able to stream the source directly now, so I can link the audio directly for the stream and then I should be able to use the mic for Skype only, so I will definitely give that a try if we do a Skype chat again Smile

Alright I have also set up a twitch account for streaming Smile. I will be streaming a lot of F-Zero X in the coming months as I will be doing the GP run for ESA this summer.
