Discussion about Rules Update regarding USB Loader usage
Reply to this Post

this topic has come up again and we're now in the process to do the rule change but first we need to show the proposed new rules and let people see it before adding the changes to the respective pages.

"Additional Rules for USB Loaders due to the nature of how USB loaders work, a few extra rules are needed to ensure no players obtain unexpected advantages over Disc users. Methods of USB Loading allowed: 1. HDD or USB stick plugged to the back of a Wii 2. SD Card inserted in the front slot of a Wii 3. SDML adapter on Memory Card slot on GameCube only these methods have been verified by the Staff and enough testing has been conducted to ensure times set using them are identical to times set with a Disc. Rules regarding usage of the game: 1. the F-Zero GX image file (ISO) must not be modified in any way. it must be the same image file obtained by reading a F-Zero GX game disc with software capable of creating a backup image of the game. 2. additional proof for times will be required in the form of Replay files. through testing, it's been determined that Replay files will only sync with game versions that don't have any modifications to machine stats. this ensures players won't be editing the game's files. this proof is required for top 5 times but it could be requested for lower ranks by the Staff at any point optionally. 3. no cheat codes can be active during gameplay. to prevent any grey areas regarding cheat codes, none will be allowed during gameplay. USB Loaders such as Nintendont usually come with functionality for cheat codes but this can be disabled entirely. you're allowed to unlock the Golden Parts in the same way it is done with Action Replay."(edited)

If replay files are required for proof, then the rules about modified ISOs and cheat codes seem unnecessary (there are already rules banning cheat codes anyway).

The requirement for top 5 seems artibrary. A trusted user has to submit if they get #5, but if some rando gets #6 they're fine?

Also if you're requiring replays, then it should be mentioned that story mode submissions are banned due to that.

the modified iso rule is to stop custom textures and music.

should the top 5 thing be removed and just require proof for everyone who uses USB loader regardless of position?

Whats wrong with modded textures / music tho. If there's hard proof through the replays, then they shouldn't be a problem.

Restricting proof for only a few gives off the idea that only those times matter, so to me it only seems fair that everyone needs proof.

fair enough. requiring the replays takes care of that.

the intent was to make runs look the same as in vanilla GX but i guess the fact replays can prove no stat modding happened helps in that situation.

i'll do an update to the rules and post it here and in the discord.

edited music will be allowed but not textures. someone could add visual cues for shift boosts or other tricks and that would create an unfair advantage for people without this ability.

i posted the rules in the discord but several people weren't okay with mods of any type so we decided to keep the unmodded game.

these are the final rules:

 Additional Rules for USB Loaders

due to the nature of how USB loaders work, a few extra rules are needed to ensure no players obtain unexpected advantages over Disc users.

Methods of USB Loading allowed:
1. HDD or USB stick plugged to the back of a Wii
2. SD Card inserted in the front slot of a Wii
3. SDML adapter on Memory Card slot on GameCube

only these methods have been verified by the Staff and enough testing has been conducted to ensure times set using them are identical to times set with a Disc. only Software mods are allowed.

Rules regarding usage of the game:

1. the F-Zero GX image file (ISO) must not be modified in any way. it must be the same image file obtained by reading a F-Zero GX game disc with software capable of creating a backup image of the game. this prevents any possible advantage provided by creating new visual or audio cues.
2. additional proof for times will be required in the form of Replay files. through testing, it's been determined that Replay files will only sync with game versions that don't have any modifications to machine stats.
this ensures players won't be editing the game's files. as a side effect, Story Mode times won't be allowed because this form of proof can't be obtained from that mode.
3. USB Loaders such as Nintendont usually come with functionality for cheat codes. make sure they are turned off when setting times. you're allowed to unlock the Golden Parts in the same way it is done with Action Replay.

the rules will be in effect soon. future discussion can take place in case ammends are needed.

Would a Wii U using nintendont in the vWii mode be qualifed for ladders? I am not aware of any differneces to the orginal disc or usb loading on Wii. If this has not been verifed, is there anytthing I can do to verify it? Sorry if this has been confirmed to not be the case but I couldn't find anything in the forums or other soucres online stating it.

after discussing with the staff, it was decided that it's allowed too since functionality is identical to running USB loader on a Wii.

considering the situation of the controllers on Wii U, it's very likely you'll end up playing with a controller that isn't a GC controller. so far, you only need to avoid turbo controllers since those are banned in the ladder.
